Happy Birthday: 770 purchased Yud Bais Menachem Av, 5700
On this date in 5700, the building at 770 Eastern Parkway in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York was purchased by Agudas Chassidei Chabad (the Chabad-Lubavitch community) to house the living quarters, study and office, Yeshivah, and shul of the Frierdiker Rebbe, who had arrived in New York (following his rescue from Nazi-occupied Warsaw) five months earlier. The Frierdiker Rebbe lived on the second floor, and the Rashag lived on the third floor. The Rebbe and rebbetzin lived on the first floor after escaping Nazi occuppied Europe.
After the histalkus of the Frierdiker Rebbe and till today, 770 is the headquarters of Lubavitch, the nerve center from which Shluchim go out to conquer the world, and the Rebbe's light shines from there to the most remote points on the globe.
770 is referred to by the Rebbe as Bais Rabbeinu sheb'Bovel, and the Rebbe also spoke about the numerical value of 770- poratzta. Bais Agudas Chassidei Chabad 770 is probably the most revered building in the world, and has many look-alikes. The 770 in Kfar Chabad is the most accurate copy, with many twins the world over.
